After seven years of fronting the legendary ska-punk band Voodoo Glow Skulls, Efrem Schulz is stepping down as lead vocalist. Schulz, who joined the band in 2017, will be refocusing his efforts on his original projects: Death by Stereo, Manic Hispanic, and Mutiny. His departure makes way for the return of Frank Casillas, the band’s original lead singer and co-founder.
The news was confirmed in a heartfelt post from Voodoo Glow Skulls’ official Instagram page:
“Friends and family, we’d like to thank everyone for their continued support of the band the past 36 years and Efrem Schulz for helping us keep our musical dream alive for the past 7 of those years. As some of you may have heard, he has decided to return to his original band, Death By Stereo, full time.
We’d like to announce the return of our brother Frank Casillas on lead vocals starting this Saturday, October 5th at @regenttheaterla.
Thank you!
Eddie and Jorge Casillas”
The October 5th show at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles will mark Frank Casillas’ first performance with the band since his initial departure in 2017. A founding member of the group, Frank helped Voodoo Glow Skulls establish their distinctive fusion of ska, punk rock, and metal that made them an influential name in the underground music scene for over three decades. His return is sure to ignite nostalgia among longtime fans who remember his high-energy performances and gritty, rapid-fire vocals.
Efrem Schulz’s tenure with Voodoo Glow Skulls has been nothing short of significant, helping to carry the band through a new era with his own vocal prowess while staying true to their energetic and politically charged sound. His decision to leave, while bittersweet, allows him to focus on his other musical endeavors, including his long-running band Death by Stereo, and his roles in Manic Hispanic and Mutiny.
Voodoo Glow Skulls, formed in 1988 by brothers Eddie, Jorge, and Frank Casillas, are known for their unique blend of genres, mixing third-wave ska with punk rock and Latin influences. Their debut album, “Who Is, This Is?” released in 1993, is considered a ska-punk classic, and they have remained a staple in the genre ever since.
As the band gears up for their next chapter, fans can expect a seamless transition with Frank Casillas back at the mic, reigniting the fiery energy that has kept Voodoo Glow Skulls relevant for more than 36 years.
Catch Frank’s return to the stage this Saturday, October 5, at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles. It’s sure to be a performance filled with the raw power and intensity that the Casillas brothers have built their legacy on.
Tickets are still available, and fans of both Voodoo Glow Skulls and Efrem Schulz won’t want to miss this pivotal moment in the band’s history.
