The Planet Smashers Pack Their Bags in New Single, ‘Things You Do”

Montreal’s long-running ska-punk powerhouse The Planet Smashers are back on the airwaves — and on the dance floor — with their new single Things You Do,” the second taste of their upcoming tenth studio album On the Dancefloor, set for release August 22 via Stomp Records.

The track, arriving today alongside a brand-new music video, delivers exactly what fans have come to

expect from the Canadian skanking kings: tight brass hits, melodic guitar chops, and a walking bassline that bounces with infectious energy. At just over three minutes, it’s a lean, hook-heavy burst of ska-punk joy, the kind of song that’s impossible to hear without moving your feet.

“This one was built for the live show,” says frontman and founding member Matt Collyer, who’s been steering the band since their formation in 1994. “We want people dancing, sweating, smiling — that’s the whole point.”

And if anyone knows how to get a crowd moving, it’s The Planet Smashers. Three decades deep into their career, they’ve played their brassy, good-time punk in packed clubs, festival stages, and sweaty basements across North America, Europe, and Japan. Along the way, they’ve racked up over 30 million streams and earned a reputation for being one of the most reliably fun bands in the genre — no matter which “wave” of ska happens to be in fashion.

The new album On the Dancefloor promises to be one of the band’s most collaborative records yet, featuring 13 tracks that swing effortlessly between love songs, protest anthems, and late-night party starters. The guest list is just as impressive: ska legends Neville Staple (The Specials), Charley “Aitch” Bembridge (The Selecter), and Sara Johnston (Bran Van 3000) all lend their talents, adding layers of history and style without slowing the band’s relentless tempo.

But On the Dancefloor isn’t just a nostalgia trip. It’s a snapshot of ska-punk in 2025 — still alive, still joyous, and still carrying the torch of unity and movement that drew fans to the genre in the first place.

If Things You Do is any indication, The Planet Smashers are doing what they do best: making music that demands you get up and move. And with the new album on the horizon, that dance floor is only going to get more crowded.
