Los Angeles-based punk rock prodigies The Linda Lindas have just dropped their latest single, “No Obligation,” the ferocious title track from their forthcoming sophomore album. Set for release on October 11 via Epitaph Records, the song is already generating a buzz with its rebellious energy and unapologetic defiance.
“I don’t got no obligation,” roars bassist Eloise Wong in the song’s blistering opening, setting the tone for an album that aims to break boundaries and shrug off societal expectations. With their characteristic blend of punk rock, garage rock, and post-punk, “No Obligation” is a statement from a band determined to follow their own path.
In a joint statement, The Linda Lindas described the new track as a rallying cry for creative freedom: “Eloise wrote this ripper because we won’t adhere to what anyone else thinks we should sound like or who they think we are. We don’t make music out of obligation—we make music out of love.” The accompanying video, filmed in Japan with Naoko Yamano from Shonen Knife, reflects the band’s global reach and ever-growing fanbase.
The Linda Lindas, who first exploded onto the scene with their debut album Growing Up in 2022, have been riding a wave of critical acclaim ever since. The New York Times described their debut as “a combination of wholesome and fierce,” while Pitchfork dubbed it “the most heartwarming record of the year.” The upcoming album No Obligation promises to further their unique blend of genres, mixing punk, power pop, new wave, and even rock en español, all while balancing school schedules—since some members are still in high school and middle school.
Over the past year, the band has experienced a whirlwind of success. From performing their cover of Talking Heads’ “Found A Job” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, to touring with icons like Blondie, Paramore, and The Breeders, The Linda Lindas have cemented their status as one of the most exciting young acts in punk today. They’ve also rocked major festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Boston Calling.
Currently on a massive stadium tour across the U.S. with Green Day, Rancid, and Smashing Pumpkins, The Linda Lindas are taking their sound to even bigger audiences. The tour coincides with the lead-up to the release of No Obligation, making it a pivotal moment in their rapidly ascending career.
As No Obligation gears up for its release, the world is watching to see what’s next for this band of trailblazing teenagers. One thing is clear: The Linda Lindas are here to stay, and they’ve got no obligation to follow anyone else’s rules.
The album drops on October 11, and if “No Obligation” is any indication, it’s going to be a ferocious ride.
