JD McPherson Returns with New Album “Nite Owls” After Seven-Year Hiatus

By Ace Hartmann | Racketeer Broadcast Association  |

It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since JD McPherson, one of the modern era’s quintessential rock ‘n’ roll singer-songwriters, released a non-seasonal album. Despite this gap, McPherson has remained far from idle, serving as both the band leader and opening act for three consecutive Robert Plant and Alison Krauss tours. This summer and fall, McPherson is shifting his focus back to his solo career, starting with the release of his new track, “Sunshine Getaway” from his upcoming album ‘Nite Owls‘.

“Sunshine Getaway” is the herald for McPherson’s fourth studio album, “Nite Owls,” set to be released on September 27 via New West Records. This will be McPherson’s first album of new material since his 2018 holiday classic, “SOCKS,” widely regarded as one of the best Christmas records ever made. Fans can look forward to pre-ordering “Nite Owls,” including special vinyl exclusives at New West Records.

Over the past five years, McPherson has remained busy writing new songs and drawing inspiration from his time on the road. Touring with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant provided ample opportunity to explore new sights, visit local record shops, and gather fresh influences. With “Nite Owls,” McPherson sought to create something distinct, merging inspirations from multiple decades and styles into his unique sound.

Side A

  1. Sunshine Getaway
  2. I Can’t Go Anywhere with You (Feat. Bloodshot Bill)
  3. Just Like Summer
  4. Nite Owls
  5. Shining Like Gold

Side B

  1. The Rock and Roll Girls
  2. Baby Blues
  3. The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle
  4. Don’t Travel Through the Night Alone
  5. That’s What a Love Song Does to You

“The initial idea for the record was: It’s like if the late-60s Ventures were the session band on the first New Order record,” McPherson explains. He has achieved this vision with aplomb. “Nite Owls” delivers vintage garage-rock sounds while seamlessly bridging the musical landscapes of Bowie and Alan Vega. Tracks like “Sunshine Getaway,” “The Rock and Roll Girls,” and “I Can’t Go Anywhere with You” evoke the spirit of Chuck Berry jamming with Buddy Holly. Meanwhile, songs such as “Nite Owls” and “Don’t Travel Through the Night Alone” pay homage to the Factory sound from the UK. The album’s lone instrumental, “The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle,” channels the energy of Dick Dale and Link Wray.

With “Nite Owls,” McPherson successfully blends multiple genres from the past to craft a sound uniquely his own. This album promises to be a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his ability to evolve while remaining true to the classic rock ‘n’ roll roots that have always defined his music.

As the release date approaches, excitement is building among fans and critics alike. McPherson’s return to solo work marks a new chapter in his musical journey, one that is sure to delight longtime followers and attract new listeners. “Nite Owls” is set to be a standout release of the year, reflecting the rich tapestry of influences that have shaped McPherson’s sound.

For those eager to experience McPherson’s latest creation, “Nite Owls” will be available for pre-order soon, with vinyl exclusives that are sure to be coveted by collectors. As JD McPherson steps back into the spotlight with “Nite Owls,” it’s clear that his talent and creativity continue to shine brightly in the ever-evolving landscape of rock ‘n’ roll.
