JD McPherson Returns with New Album “Nite Owls” After Seven-Year Hiatus

It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since JD McPherson, one of the modern era’s quintessential rock ‘n’ roll singer-songwriters, released a non-seasonal album. Despite this gap, McPherson has remained far from idle, serving as both the band leader and opening act for three consecutive Robert Plant and Alison Krauss tours. This summer and fall, McPherson is shifting his focus back to his solo career, starting with the release of his new track, “Sunshine Getaway” from his upcoming album ‘Nite Owls‘.

“Sunshine Getaway” is the herald for McPherson’s fourth studio album, “Nite Owls,” set to be released on September 27 via New West Records. This will be McPherson’s first album of new material since his 2018 holiday classic, “SOCKS,” widely regarded as one of the best Christmas records ever made. “The initial idea for the record was: It’s like if the late-60s Ventures were the session band on the first New Order record,” McPherson explains. He has achieved this vision with aplomb. “Nite Owls” delivers vintage garage-rock sounds while seamlessly bridging the musical landscapes of Bowie and Alan Vega. Tracks like “Sunshine Getaway,” “The Rock and Roll Girls,” and “I Can’t Go Anywhere with You” evoke the spirit of Chuck Berry jamming with Buddy Holly. Meanwhile, songs such as “Nite Owls” and “Don’t Travel Through the Night Alone” pay homage to the Factory sound from the UK. The album’s lone instrumental, “The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle,” channels the energy of Dick Dale and Link Wray.

With “Nite Owls,” McPherson successfully blends multiple genres from the past to craft a sound uniquely his own.
