Brian Setzer, the rockabilly legend behind The Stray Cats and The Brian Setzer Orchestra, has shared difficult news with fans: he has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that has temporarily taken away his ability to play guitar. Despite the setback, Setzer remains optimistic, reassuring fans that he is seeing progress and is determined to recover.
The legendary guitarist and songwriter took to social media to share his condition, revealing that he first noticed symptoms during the last
Stray Cats tour. “Towards the end of the last Stray Cats tour I noticed that my hands were cramping up,” he wrote. “I cannot play guitar. There is no pain, but it feels like I am wearing a pair of gloves when I try to play.”
For a musician whose hands have crafted some of the most electrifying riffs in rockabilly history, the news is a heavy blow. Yet Setzer’s spirit remains unshaken. He shared that while simple tasks like holding a pen and tying his shoes were once impossible, he has made progress. “I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was at a point where I couldn’t even do that,” he admitted.
Fortunately, Setzer is receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic, one of the world’s top medical institutions, and he is confident that this challenge is just another hurdle he will overcome. “I know I will beat this, it will just take some time,” he reassured his supporters.
Since their formation in 1979, The Stray Cats have been synonymous with rockabilly revival, fusing vintage sounds with a punk rock edge. After nearly a decade apart, Setzer reunited with the band in 2018, reigniting their high-energy performances and proving that the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll never fades.
Setzer’s announcement has sent waves of support across the music community, with fans and fellow musicians expressing their love and encouragement. His influence on rockabilly and swing music has spanned generations, and if there’s one thing Brian Setzer has taught us, it’s that nothing—be it time, trends, or even personal adversity—can keep a true rock ‘n’ roller down for long.
As he takes time to heal, one thing is certain: when Brian Setzer makes his return, it will be loud, electrifying, and nothing short of legendary.
Take all the time you need, Brian. Keep us all updated, we’re all in your corner.
