Amyl and the Sniffers Are Back with a New Album ‘Cartoon Darkness’ Out October 25

Amyl and the Sniffers are back! After a three-year hiatus, the Aussie punk rockers are set to release their highly anticipated third album, Cartoon Darkness, on October 25, 2024, via Rough Trade Records. This latest project follows their acclaimed 2021 album Comfort To Me and their self-titled debut in 2019.

The band worked with renowned producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) to craft the album at Foo Fighters’ iconic 606 Studios in Los Angeles earlier this year. Launay’s expertise, combined with Amyl and the Sniffers’ relentless energy, promises an album that’s as raw and urgent as their previous efforts, but with new layers of depth.

Frontwoman Amy Taylor describes Cartoon Darkness as a journey into the unknown, a reflection on the chaos of modern life. Tackling topics like the climate crisis, war, AI, and the numbing effects of Big Tech, the album dives deep into the anxiety and confusion of today’s world. As Taylor puts it, “Cartoon Darkness is about climate crisis, war, AI, tiptoeing on the eggshells of politics, and people feeling like they’re helping by having a voice online when we’re all just feeding the data beast of Big Tech, our modern-day god.

The album explores how the younger generation, despite appearing grown up, often remains stuck in a childlike state, cocooned by the constant barrage of online distractions. Taylor elaborates, “We look like adults, but we’re children forever cocooned in a shell. We’re all passively gulping up distractions that don’t even cause pleasure, sensation, or joy—they just cause numbness.

Cartoon Darkness doesn’t just dwell on the grim, though. Taylor describes the album’s mood as “driving headfirst into the unknown, into this looming sketch of the future that feels terrible but doesn’t even exist yet.” For her, the darkness is not without a sense of irony and playfulness: “The future is cartoon, the prescription is dark, but it’s novelty. It’s just a joke. It’s fun.

With their signature blend of punk ferocity and thoughtful social commentary, Amyl and the Sniffers continue to evolve. Cartoon Darkness will undoubtedly add a new chapter to their legacy, bringing fans even closer to the pulse of the band’s explosive energy and raw lyricism. The album’s sound is expected to combine the unfiltered aggression that fans know and love with a broader and more nuanced approach to the world around us.

Make sure to mark your calendars for October 25, when Cartoon Darkness officially hits the shelves. Tune in to Racketeer Radio KFQX for first listens and stay connected as we follow Amyl and the Sniffers on their latest journey into the cartoonishly dark world of punk rock.
