In a bold and captivating move, the renowned band The Defiant has released their latest single and music video, a dynamic cover of The Interrupters’ iconic anthem, “Take Back the Power.” The release, available on all major streaming platforms as of this morning, has already garnered widespread acclaim for its fresh yet faithful rendition of the beloved track.
The original “Take Back the Power” by The Interrupters, released in the summer of 2014, known for its ska-punk energy and powerful socio-political message, has long been a staple for fans of the genre. The Defiant, known for their own politically charged and high-energy style, have breathed new life into the song while retaining its core message of empowerment and resistance.
From the very first note, The Defiant’s version of “Take Back the Power” commands attention with its intensified guitar riffs and amplified drum beats. Lead vocalist Dicky Barrett’s gritty yet melodious voice adds a new layer of urgency and passion to the lyrics, resonating deeply with the current socio-political climate.
The Defiant’s rendition not only stays true to the spirit of the original but also infuses it with their unique sound. The music video for the cover, a David McAfee/Casey Darron crafted video, is in black and white with the band performing and political images cut in between, including color footage of Robert F. Kennedy JR campaigning, archival footage of the independent presidential candidate’s father Robert F. Kennedy Sr. and uncle President John F. Kennedy. The Defiant utilizes the important message of the song to support the independent presidential candidate. The Defiant has played their cover of “Take Back the Power” live on their recent tour with UltraBomb and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and seems the band will play it live even more so as the presidential race comes to its peak in November.
As the world continues to grapple with challenges and uncertainties, The Defiant’s cover of “Take Back the Power” serves as a potent reminder of the strength found in unity and the enduring power of music to inspire change. By reinvigorating a modern classic, The Defiant has not only paid homage to their influences but also provided a new anthem for those who refuse to be silenced.
