Remembering Wink Martindale: A Broadcast Legend & Beloved Voice of Rock’n’Roll

Wink Martindale, the legendary game show host, radio personality, and our cherished voice behind  History of Rock ‘n’ Roll,  has passed away on April 15, 2025, in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 91. He died after a year-long battle with lymphoma, surrounded by his wife of 49 years, Sandy, and family.

wink martindaleBorn Winston Conrad Martindale on December 4, 1933, in Jackson, Tennessee, Wink’s broadcasting journey began at just 17 years old as a DJ at WPLI. His warm baritone voice and affable demeanor quickly propelled him through the ranks of radio, leading to a pivotal role at WHBQ in Memphis, where he conducted one of Elvis Presley’s earliest TV interviews in 1956.

Martindale’s television career flourished with hosting stints on popular game shows such as Gambit (1972–76, 1980–81), Tic-Tac-Dough (1978–85), High Rollers (1987–88), and Debt (1996–98). His engaging hosting style and genuine connection with contestants endeared him to audiences nationwide.

Beyond television, Wink made his mark in the music industry with the 1959 spoken-word hit “Deck of Cards,” which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. His passion for music persisted throughout his life, culminating in his role as the host of The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a two-hour weekend radio program launched in 2021 that celebrated the music of the 1950s through the 90s.

In recognition of his contributions to entertainment, Wink Martindale was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class on May 5, 2012. This honor recognized his significantlicensed image contributions to radio broadcasting in Tennessee, particularly his early work as a DJ at WHBQ in Memphis. ​Martindale received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, organizing telethons for causes such as cerebral palsy and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Wink is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters Lisa, Lyn, and Laura, and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Wink Jr.
