Cherry Poppin’ Daddies Light Up Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley with New Album Release Party

Seattle’s iconic Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley is set to host a three-night celebration for the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ latest album, At The Pink Rat. From November 19 through November 21, fans will experience the Daddies’ eclectic blend of high-energy swing, jazz, and Big Band-era sounds, as well as some of the boldest new material from their 12th studio release.

At The Pink Rat draws inspiration from early 20th-century Hot Jazz and Ragtime as well as the golden age of Big Band, crafting a vibrant soundtrack that bandleader Steve Perry describes as “Saturday Night Fever meets Swing Kids.” The album’s closing track, “Cookie Brown,” holds special meaning for Perry, paying tribute to his wife and her Mexican American heritage, with a nod to her family’s experiences in the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots.

Long known for their skillful arrangements and electrifying live performances, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies continue to redefine their place in American music. The band—featuring Steve Perry on vocals, Dana Heitman on trumpet, Willie Matheis on tenor sax, Chris Shuttleworth on trombone, Jason Moss on guitar, Dan Schmid on bass, and Nik Barber on drums—has a knack for bringing past musical eras to life. From roaring ‘20s Jazz Age tributes to WWII-inspired “Christmas Canteen” shows, they offer an experience reminiscent of everything from Cotton Club vibes to Rat Pack swagger.

While most fans recall their breakout Zoot Suit Riot from 1997, which helped ignite the neo-swing movement, the Daddies’ recent work emphasizes their deep-rooted Americana style. “We adhere mostly to a pre-rock, pre-’50s hot jazz and Tin Pan Alley tradition,” says Perry. “It’s unfortunate, but I believe it comforts modern audiences to see that we are able to play in an orthodox fashion, before they allow us to reach out for something unfamiliar or multifaceted.” This blend of classic influence and modern commentary gives the Daddies their unique edge in the contemporary music scene.
