The Kilograms Title Track From Debut LP ‘Beliefs & Thieves’ as Pre-Order Opens Before West Coast Tour

In the late fall of 2023, a serendipitous collaboration brought together two icons of the punk and ska scenes, Joe Gittleman of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Avoid One Thing, and Sammy Kay. They formed The Kilograms, a band rooted in soulful ska with a punk rock edge. Their mission? To create authentic music with raw lyrical content and share it with the masses.

Their debut track, “Who Am I (To Say),” debuted on the benefit compilation Black Sand Relief: A Benefit for Michelle Ska the People of Maui. The song, a heartfelt tribute to those affected by the Maui fires, blends mellow melodic tones with profound sincerity, showcasing The Kilograms’ ability to transform personal experiences into universally resonant art.

This powerful introduction inspired the band to expand its lineup, adding Michael McDermott (The Bouncing Souls, Joan Jett) and J Duckworth (Newport Secret Six). With this robust lineup, they embarked on creating their debut self-titled EP, released on February 9 of 2024 via Connecticut’s Asbestos Records.

The Kilograms’ self-titled EP delivers an eclectic mix of five tracks that highlight the band’s dynamic range and emotional depth. This EP is a testament to The Kilograms’ artistry, blending heartfelt lyrics with infectious rhythms to create music that resonates deeply with listeners. The self-titled EP leaves a lasting impression of the band’s versatility and creativity, which we will get sooner rather than later – and live!

Recorded by Pete Steinkopf (The Bouncing Souls) and mixed by Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead), this album is a masterclass in genre-blending. Beliefs & Thieves is available for pre-order now!

From the upbeat energy of ska to the introspective grooves of reggae and the raw attitude of punk rock, Beliefs & Thieves showcases the band’s exceptional musicianship. Standout tracks like the title song “Beliefs & Thieves” and “Ya Ya” balance high-energy anthems with introspective jams. Sammy Kay’s soulful melodies, Joe Gittleman’s dynamic basslines, Michael McDermott’s precision drumming, Jay Duckworth’s infectious guitar work, and Craig Gorsline’s earworm keyboard riffs combine to create an unforgettable listening experience. The album’s striking visual art by Joe Maiocco and its high-quality vinyl pressing make it a must-have for collectors and genre enthusiasts alike.

The Kilograms are redefining ska and punk, blending their storied pasts with a forward-thinking sound. Beliefs & Thieves is more than an album; it’s a bold statement from a band destined for legendary status. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of ska and punk or a newcomer to the genre, The Kilograms’ music promises an authentic and electrifying experience.
